Hello all you amazing TOFS out there.

I have a 13 year old tof daughter who has to have a nissens Fundoplication in May. We need some help and advice about what to expect and what she will be able to eat etc. Many thanks

Hi there
I do know a couple of children that have had a Nissen, one after a tof, the other was a child with very bad oesophagititis.  It seems the spincter into the stomach does not work efficiently, is this what has happen with your daughter?

I don’t often see the little boy now as he has changed schools but I will pop into her work maybe and see if she can offer any advice to you. Her son is 10 now he had a nissen a couple of years ago.

However, I am sure there will be many posts on here with stories of people who have been through this. Stay positive,

Kind regards
Delyse and Bernadette

Hi Cate
My son Jack (4) has had two fundo’s. The first one was a Thal(1/2 wrap) which came undone and the second a Nissen’s. It has been really good for him, reducing his reflux alot. The main issue was that his stomach was really small afterwards so he had to eat little, but often. Over time he has stretched it and eats really well now. We know he has loosened his wrap because he can now vomit a bit. As he has hardly any peristalsis, that’s a good thing for him. The dr was careful not to make the opening too tight so that he could still eat ok. Jack sometimes has problems with wind but not too often. If I pat his back it helps him burp and feel better.
My sister in law has also had a Nissen’s and has had no problems. She said she gets pains in her stomach if she has gastro as she can’t vomit but that’s better than the reflux.
Jack ate puree after the op for a few days and then progressed to soft lumps - veg, scrambled eggs, mince, bread etc. He wasn’t allowed to have anything hard for 6 weeks. I’m not sure if that’s standard or if his surgeon was just being careful as his first wrap came undone.
I hope all goes well for your daughter, I’m sure it will.

Hi Cate
My son Devin (3yr in 2wks) had his nissen done when he was 15mths.he wasnt able to eat for 2 days.on the 3rd day he started having little amounts of water and milk every 15mins.then was on moulied baby food for 3mths as they didnt want any strictures to occur while things settled down.he was weaned off his reflux meds over 2wks following the nissen being done.after the 3mths he managed to start eatting the same meals as use in the space of 4wks.since the nissen we havent had any vomitting.in januaray devin was scoped and they said that they were amased that his nissen is still 100% in tack.we did go through a period of a few months of having to have 4-6 meals a day as it was little and often meals due to his stomach being smaller than before.we were also told that he wouldnt be able to burp after the nissen but i will let you knoe that is not true he burps that loud and big that others are amased that such a little boy can make such a big noise.hope all goes well for your daughter and you will be amased at the improvement it makes in your house hold too.

Thanks to you all for responding.
We have been sent a letter from the hospital requesting that Alex is kept free from exposure to any form of viral/bacterial infection for 3 weeks prior to surgery. She is in a school with approx 1500 girls and has 2 sisters also at school! any ideas. Do you think it’s worth keeping her at home during this time.

Hi Cate
If it was me i would be keeping all the kids home and collecting the school work for them to do at home in the 3wks just to be safe, also wouldnt be taking them to town unless it is to the drs and having a no visitors rule inplace.it may sound a bit over the top but it is always best to be safe and prepared then to be sorry.i had to have simillar rules like that with devin for the yr he was born and the following yr over winter as the smallest cold lead to him being in hospital for a wk or more, and being a single parent made it just that little bit harder when it came to shopping i ended up having to do internet banking and give my parents or a friend my list and get them to do my shopping for me just so that devin wasnt sick.
