I am wondering if anyone else has ever been offered this as a cause of night time cough.  I know tof children do cough but my consultant wonders whether this is causing the persistent cough we get every winter that last for 2-3 months.  He has suggested post nasal drip as a possible cause of this and am now waiting for an ENT appointment to check this out.

Hi Debbie,

We asked about this at the TOFs conference as our son Jack more often that not coughs at night, primarily during the winter months.  A couple of consultants suggested that it might be reflux but said it would usually happen as soon as they are asleep, this doesn’t happen with Jack, it is usually in the early hours.  We haven’t had any other explanation so would be interested to hear the results of your ENT appointment.

Hi
We find that Jack (4) coughs when the air is cold. We bought a portable oil heater and just take the chill off his room and then he has a better sleep. Interesting thought though. I look forward to hearing the result.

I tried to get RSV vaccination but the cost was the reason that we were not succesful also the old excuse that the first two winters are the worst.
This is our third winter and it has been pretty bad.

Am phoning every day to get ENT appointment to see about this post nasal drip.  In the mean time another course of antibiotics and a course of steroid tabs combined with a ventolin inhaler seem to be doing the job.  At least Barnaby was only coughing for one hour last night not like three the night before.

We had a better year last year so this has hit us pretty badly especially literally watching the weight fall off him after all that hard work getting him to put it on in the first place!  But we all know how that feels.

thanks everyone.  Hoorah for steroids we have had two much better nights.  Long may that last.  Interesting about RSV in cycles.  They take their lead form Australia normally to see how bad it is there to see how badly we are going to get it.  So could all TOF’s in Oz warn us in advance!
